Why is Colony different than other cycling products?

Colony, unlike most other products that claim to “cycle the aquarium”, contains actual aerobic autotrophs. These bacteria are not as easily produced, packaged, shipped, and stored as heterotroph bacteria that is commonly used. While these bacteria can, under rare conditions, consume small amounts of ammonia as a secondary energy source (never nitrite) and technically be called a “nitrifying bacteria”, they are not to be confused with true nitrifying bacteria that consume ammonia and nitrate as a primary energy source.
